The Spotlight on Gilesgate Moor Hotel

Relaxed Comfort on the Edge of Durham

Gilesgate Moor Hotel is a charming and budget-friendly bed and breakfast located just outside the center of Durham. With a cozy, traditional vibe and free private parking, it's a great home base for exploring the city or catching a concert nearby. The hotel offers a peaceful atmosphere with a shared lounge area and a hearty breakfast to start your day—or recover from a late night.

Why Concert-goers love it

While not in the heart of the city, the hotel is within reasonable driving distance of popular venues like The Sage and the Stadium of Light. With free parking and easy access to major roads, it's a smart pick if you're traveling by car. The quiet residential setting means you’ll avoid the post-show city noise, and the relaxed check-in from 16:00 gives you time to arrive and unwind before heading out for the night.

Who this Hotel is great for

Groups of friends looking for a budget-conscious base
Solo travelers catching a big-name act
Couples planning a chilled weekend in Durham
Fans wanting to recharge in peace after the encore
Budget-conscious music fans who don’t need frills but appreciate convenience

Food and Drink Options

Start your morning with your choice of a continental, full English/Irish, or vegetarian breakfast—perfect for recovering after a late night. While there’s no on-site restaurant for dinner or late-night snacks, the hotel’s location near Durham means you’re just a short drive or taxi ride from plenty of pubs and eateries. There’s also a cozy shared lounge for a nightcap if you’re winding down.

Nightlife Options

Though the hotel itself is quiet and doesn’t host live music, you’re within reach of Durham’s nightlife scene, including local bars, pubs, and lounges. The Sage and other concert venues aren’t far if you're planning to catch a show and then head back to a quieter space.

What People Say

Guests consistently praise the hotel’s friendly staff, clean rooms, and great value for money. The free parking and easy check-in process also get high marks. Many reviewers mention the comfortable, relaxed vibe, making it a great place to rest after a busy night out.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests mention the decor is a bit dated, and the location isn’t walkable to central Durham venues. However, if you're driving or happy to grab a taxi, it's a manageable trade-off for the peace and price.

The Bottom Line

Gilesgate Moor Hotel is a solid pick for concert-goers seeking a quiet, budget-friendly stay with easy driving access to Durham’s music scene.

Cheap and cheerful. But I...

Liked: We only met one member of staff but he was lovely. Very friendly, chatty and pleasant. He welcomed us, took payment then showed us around and took us up to our room. We were told we could access the free WiFi. No password required. The room was in a pub so no reception to greet us if we planned to come back later than closing time, but we were given a key to a side door and able to let ourselves in independently, which fit in with our plans. We were in two single beds, which I was expecting as that was all that was available, clean if dated duvet covers and crisp clean white sheets. The mattresses didn’t feel comfortable on first sitting on them but neither of us had any trouble sleeping so they did the job. The room contained a wardrobe with plenty of coat hangers. Extra blankets in case of cold nights. A dressing table with chair, bedside tables each with a lamp and a tv on the wall. There was a small mirror but it wasnt above the dressing table so it was awkward for hair and makeup. There was another mirror in the bathroom. A small corner unit for toothbrushes etc, and hooks for clothes/towels behind the door. There was a bin in both rooms. We had two fresh white towels each and the bathroom had a bath mat for outside of the shower. Hand soap and shower gel, a spare toilet roll although no toothpaste. We had a kettle with the usual tea, coffee, sugar, milk selections, 2 mini packs of biscuits and 2 teaspoons and small mugs. There were no glasses for water. LIt was cheap @£75 for the night for two, including breakfast. We weren’t told of check out time but we were ready to go by 11am and were again helped out by the landlord who was as pleasant and chatty as the day before.
Disliked: There was no parking other than what was available for other establishments. We parked outside of a shop next door to the pub that luckily wasn’t open on either of the two days we were there.Breakfast, we were told, was only served between 7&8 am. Apparently this was to enable staff to start preparing for the Sunday lunches they offer. There was no option upon booking to reserve the room without breakfast. I feel we should have been forewarned of the time slot to eat in and given the option to have that cost deducted from the bill.7 am is too early (especially on a Sunday) to get up and get ready to eat what I presume was a cooked breakfast option. But as we didn’t make the slot we didn’t find out what it could have been. Out of 8 guests staying, I was told only 2 made it down for breakfast. However Macdonalds was directly opposite. While very dated with pine furniture and 90’s patterned duvets, On first inspection the room looked clean. But the bathroom fell short. There was dust and spider webs in corners and all around the edges of the skirting board, a dirty toilet brush in the corner and there were pubic hairs in the shower. The shower took a long time to settle into a good heat and we were woken by a gurgling coming through the plug hole in the morning when other rooms were using their showers. The taps didn’t turn off easily/properly so dripped and the toilet didn’t flush first or even second time.As we were late back to the room I’m guessing everyone was asleep and there was no sound from other guests. But we could hear every word of conversations had the next morning, coming through the wall.Although we had spare blankets in case of cold weather, there was no fan available in the room for hot weather, so windows had to be opened, but this was onto a very noisy, busy street, even on a Sunday morning. We weren’t given safety/emergency info and weren’t told how to contact a member of staff if we had an issue during the night.
