Liked: Great location
Disliked: Bar/restaurant shut early on a Sunday 19.00, for a hotel this is poor - went into town centre for refreshments and food

Quirky decor, but tired, both...
Liked: The decor of the bar, lounge and dining area was really quirky and different which was one of the reasons we chose this place to stay. We also chose one of the vintage style rooms rather than the modern rooms, but, we had to call and confirm as it doesn’t clarify on the booking system. Overall it was clean and tidy. The bathroom was a little tired and the extractor fan was sluggish, however everything worked fine. The room was nice and large but made watching evening tv difficult as it seemed small/ far away. No chance of reading subtitles. In the evening my partner and I had a drink in the bar. It was only us in there and the barmaid was cashing up. So, we moved onto the lounge area to finish our drinks as we didn’t want to keep them from closing the bar early. On retiring to bed, unfortunately, possibly my personal preference, the mattress seemed rather hard and uncomfortable. Our room was main road facing which understandably made it quite noisy. But the noise from the, what I think, air conditioning/heating system made a noise all night. We had turned ours off but it made no difference. The day after I asked if they supplied ear plugs and expressed my concern. They offered to swap us to a new room straight away which was a big relief. Again, we spent some time in the bar on the second night. The options of larger available was limited and spirits seemed a bit pricey however, after a couple of drinks we were happy to have some peaceful sleep. Unfortunately, there was still a noise of the internal air conditioning system but it wasn’t as bad. But, the guests in the next room had come back a little later that evening and turned on their television, and rightly so! But from I can make out our bed must have been against the wall of their television and it was extremely loud!! Rather than letting the staff know we packed up and left as we were just exhausted and fed up. Thankfully we only lived an hour away.
Disliked: - The mattress in the initial booked room was very firm and uncomfortable. The bed had also been moved, possibly when cleaning but one of the legs was resting on the skirting board. Could have caused quite the surprise! - the internal noise from the heating/aircon unit needs looking into to. Or supply ear plugs - the barmaid on the first night made us feel quite uncomfortable and wasn’t welcoming however the other staff members were absolutely lovely and so helpful. - the noise from the guests next door having their tv quite loud around midnight. A rethink in placing bed next to walls with opposing televisions needed or sound protection? - bigger tv in large rooms? - there wasn’t a big light in the second room, only dim lamps. Which was nice but could be an issue for partially sighted.
