Disappointing. Has seen better days; needs refurbishing in the rooms; love the old building but needs some tender loving care!

Liked: The character - lovely old hotel.
Disliked: Hair drier in room unsafe - the vent on the back protecting the fan broken clean in half. The toilet seat, when lifted, was peeling and in a pretty bad state. The mattress had a plastic sheet on it underneath the sheet which immediately made you sweat as soon as you make contact - awful!

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Grace B, Cheltenham, visiting Plymouth Pavilions Sun, 9 February 2014

The hotel in the main areas was lovely; the bar was fantastic; ambience of the hotel was great; staff were very accommodating. The room, however, was very small compared to the photos that had intrigued us to stay at the hotel on the website. The bed sheets had stains on and there were hairs on the pillow case; the bathroom wallpaper was ripped in several areas and there were dirty marks and chipped paint work all over the doors and wood work. There was no room in the car park so had to pay for parking in the morning we had to get up to go and pay the meter at 10am in the morning. Housekeeping walked into our room at 9.10 am. Unfortunately we missed breakfast as we went down at 9.50a.m. to be told breakfast was not being served any more. When we went to check out we were told we had a fee of £8 to pay. We queried this as we had paid with cash for a sandwich and drinks at the bar the night before. The woman at reception told us it was a fee because we had the sandwich sent to the room and therefore this was room service! We explained that we weren't aware of being charged £8 for a £6.50 sandwich to which the staff rudely huffed at us never mind. She didn't look at us again nor did she thank us for staying or say goodbye - we were quite shocked by this and quickly left the hotel. The hotel was in a great location and like I said the main areas are lovely - it was just a shame that our experience here wasn't relaxing or memorable.

Disliked: Room was dated and needed redecorating.

Our stay there was great,...

Liked: The hotel was lovely and in a very good location for our needs. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bathroom was large and had a good shower and a bath.
Disliked: The bathroom had almost no surfaces to put sponge bags and contents on. The room was very warm. The floors were very creaky, which meant that it was noisy above us. The gluten free options for breakfast were limited. Although I told them when I booked the only real specific provision was gluten free bread; the rest was 'take your pick from what we've got if it happens to be gluten free' I am used to this lack of any extra provision, but it would be nice if they made an effort when you told them in advance, especially as we were there for three nights.

Very good

Liked: Beautiful Gothic style building. 4 poster room 305 massive. Splendid breakfast, staff very attentive.
Disliked: Unless you book and pay for breakfasts at check in the price goes up by a third. This wasn't explained to us at check in.

Great stay, old school hotel...

Liked: Really old school hotel with original features and facilities. The room we had was extremely large and staff were amazing. We travelled with our dog and the hotel was extremely accommodating. The breakfast was also very tasty and plentiful.

In need of refurbishment

Liked: The view from the room we had in tower suite was amazing. Staff were friendly.
Disliked: Sadly it’s quite tired. There is a lack of standard facilities you’d expect in a hotel. No safe, fridge or bottled water that comes as standard these days. The heating wasn’t working in our room, but they did provide a small portable heater. The furniture was dated and unnecessary and the carpets were almost threadbare in the Tower room. Cracked and peeling paint on the windowsills.
