Disappointing. Has seen better days; needs refurbishing in the rooms; love the old building but needs some tender loving care!

Liked: The character - lovely old hotel.
Disliked: Hair drier in room unsafe - the vent on the back protecting the fan broken clean in half. The toilet seat, when lifted, was peeling and in a pretty bad state. The mattress had a plastic sheet on it underneath the sheet which immediately made you sweat as soon as you make contact - awful!

The hotel in the main areas was lovely; the bar was fantastic; ambience of the hotel was great; staff were very accommodating. The room, however, was very small compared to the photos that had intrigued us to stay at the hotel on the website. The bed sheets had stains on and there were hairs on the pillow case; the bathroom wallpaper was ripped in several areas and there were dirty marks and chipped paint work all over the doors and wood work. There was no room in the car park so had to pay for parking in the morning we had to get up to go and pay the meter at 10am in the morning. Housekeeping walked into our room at 9.10 am. Unfortunately we missed breakfast as we went down at 9.50a.m. to be told breakfast was not being served any more. When we went to check out we were told we had a fee of £8 to pay. We queried this as we had paid with cash for a sandwich and drinks at the bar the night before. The woman at reception told us it was a fee because we had the sandwich sent to the room and therefore this was room service! We explained that we weren't aware of being charged £8 for a £6.50 sandwich to which the staff rudely huffed at us never mind. She didn't look at us again nor did she thank us for staying or say goodbye - we were quite shocked by this and quickly left the hotel. The hotel was in a great location and like I said the main areas are lovely - it was just a shame that our experience here wasn't relaxing or memorable.

Disliked: Room was dated and needed redecorating.

Liked: The shower was superb. Loved the decor. The people that managed out check out were very professional and nice. Gluten free options for breakfast request was granted.
Disliked: Where should I even start? Room was nice by itself, but the window view? what view. Some back alley construction thing? Awful. Basically took away from all the nice things in the room. As the hotel was going into maintenance (as we were informed later) I this assume it wasn?t fully booked? we just got assigned one of the awful rooms. Seriously, it felt like going on a cruise ship trip and finding your room was below water level. Third class citizens. We stayed only one night and checked out early, but still it left a sour taste - and made even worse as it was my birthday and I wanted to treat myself to a nice stay, a morning wake up to a nice room and a nice view. Seriously, anything would be better than the view we got in the room? and I?m used to booking accommodations on the cheap side. So this ?splurge? was a disappointment - especially after all the nice rooms showcased in the hotel page? Never going back, will not recommend to anyone I know. Also - my friend has a gluten allergy, which I informed the hotel about way in advance, they assured us they?ll have gluten free options available. Yes, they had them when we arrived. But the lady taking our breakfast order - literally rolled her eyes when my friend asked about the gluten free options? she felt ridiculed for her dietary requirement. So all in all? not the best experience ever. The night Time check in person also didn?t make us feel welcome. Was it because we booked via this page? Is the offer just to fill in the worse rooms they have and the nice pictures are just for the most ?wanted? guests? Not sure what the policy of this hotel is, I thought as they didn?t have the property fully booked, it would be a nice gesture to book us into a room with a nicer view. Anything would be better than this? Plus the window didn?t open much - just one small wing - which I can guess is security reasons but it was very stuffy - no ventilation no AC.

We won't be staying again.

Liked: The room was large and very clean.
Disliked: Where do I begin?! The telephone didn't work so we couldn't phone reception. The chairs in the sitting room weren't very comfortable. The beds moved around when they were sat on. No tourist details about Plymouth in the room, no restaurant menu. The bar didn't have a menu and we were told to ask for what we wanted - no Hendricks no choice of tonic. Plymouth gin wasn't promoted at all by the barman so no selling of products that are local to the area. There was no breakfast included in the price we paid which was rather poor considering we paid £120 for one night. The restaurant menu was very poor - pizza, fish and chips, typical pub food, not what we expected at all. The car park was an awkward shape but we parked in marked out spaces. Someone blocked us in and when we went to the reception the lady there didn't have a clue what to do. Eventually a man came out with the keys of the car blocking us in. I asked him who he was because he didn't introduce himself. He happened to be the duty manager. No introduction, no apology, apparently the car owners were too drunk to move the car and so he was doing us a favour. This used to be such a nice hotel but is now shabby and poor. I must say though that the lady who was on duty in the breakfast area was great and very helpful as she went around and asked each of the people there about the car park.

Liked: Very convenient for being near the Hoe, parks, amenities etc.
Disliked: It was exceptionally hot the 3 nights we stayed and no air conditioning in our room made it difficult to sleep. I?d also forgotten how small a 5ft bed is!

Liked: I loved the surroundings, our room and bathroom were very clean. Basic amenities but lovely and comfy rooms. Would visit again when in town.
Disliked: Location is on a busy road so it can get a little noisy.

Liked: The interior Staff The location - you can have a lovely walk
Disliked: Not as posh as it seems - breakfast - my plate was dirty, toasts were served long before breakfast was served so it was cold by the time the breakfast arrived, the tea and coffee was really poor quality as to our liking The waiter was serving breakfast with a very, very dirty tea towel - that was really off putting and said a lot about the cleanliness Lack of air-con in the rooms, it was really hot at night and therefore it was difficult to sleepThe entrance from the car park looks like slums unfortunately although the main entrance is really beautiful it really spoils the whole impression of the place

Very good

Liked: Our room was a good size and had a lounge area adjoining the bedroom. both rooms had a television. We had a shower and a bath and toiletries were supplied. The hotel was midway between the Barbican and Royal William Yard, each place taking about 20 minutes to walk to, and both well worth a visit. Parking is limited but we were able to get a space for both nights we were there.
Disliked: We stayed during the recent heatwave so the room was very warm despite having all the windows open and there were no fans in the room. The duvet was also a heavy winter one so we slept on top of the bed without covers.
