Passable

Disliked: The place is looking tired. Cobwebs in the room, black mould in the shower and dust building up in the changing rooms of the spa.Waited 10mins to check-in (one person on reception at check in time). Friends waited 40mins for breakfast after ordering.

Staff lovely but that’s not...

Liked: Grounds were lovely - peaceful property.
Disliked: Furniture a bit “tired”. Bar area not inviting. Nowhere suitable to just “chill out” on an evening. Rooms generally clean but unfortunately we had some kind of tapeworm living in the drapes, which completely put us off staying for the duration we had booked.

Relaxing, restful stay.

Liked: Breakfast and dinner were excellent. You can choose from the a la carte or the garden menu at dinner, they are happy for you to have a starter from one menu and a main from the other. We had the Langley suite, so we had a sitting room, kitchen (no equipment), bedroom and beautiful bathroom. The grounds are lovely to walk round and there is even a maze. The pool and spa are fabulous, you need to ask for a robe and slippers at reception or in the spa. The hotel is well placed for visiting up and down the coast. All the staff are very helpful and friendly.Make sure you explore the Doxford Hall as there are some lovely rooms to sit and have a drink in.We will definitely stay here again.
Disliked: I would have liked a better bed, the room was large enough for a super king bed. The shower screen was a little loose. I am just being picky.

Superb

Liked: Doxford hall is a period property, Georgian and Victorian, which has been added to with a period style extension. There is an opulent feel to both house and grounds. There are some lovely original period features with breakout rooms such as the library that can be enjoyed by guests The staff were very welcoming, helpful, and polite. Our room was generously sized with period styling and a huge bed that was very comfortable. The food was excellent as was the whole dining experience, candlelit dinner was a nice touch. The house keeping was also excellent and the hotel was clean and for the most part well maintained. It was also good to have access to the spa swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
Disliked: The likes definitely outweigh the dislikes so don't be put off by this review. As is often the problem with booking.com the room we booked was not the room we got. To clarify, the photos illustrating the room on the site showed a roll top bath while the room we got was a more standard hotel bathroom. Although the bathroom was nice it wasn't up to the standard of the rest of the experience, but it was adequate. There were other details of the room that we felt were a little underwhelming such as the room's tea and coffee facilities and the tv location but neither of these were deal breakers. Also, we found it odd that the room wasn't fitted with a safe as you would expect in a hotel of this standard. The only other thing that was disappointing was the availability of spa treatments. We had a lovely brochure of spa experiences in the room but when it came to booking a massage or a manicure they didn't have any available appointments for a month.
