Pleasant - 3.0 out of 5

Pleasant

Liked: The entire staff, all of them new since Sowell took over two months ago, were all very friendly and helpful.I expect and hope that at least some of the "teething troubles" listed below, will be rectified in the near future. Especially the dinner (non-)service. Otherwise we will not be willing to stay there again, which would be a pity.
Disliked: We arrived well before the start of the announced 16:00 check-in time, but had to wait around until 17:00 before getting a room. Other new arrivals were getting their rooms before 16:00.We had requested a high (i.e. 2nd) floor, but were allocated a ground floor room, which we declined. We were then shown to a 1st floor room (#205) with a rough wooden "balcony" about 50 cm wide, and a 40 cm high step to access it, with no space for seats! So we had to change room yet again (to #203).Last time we were there, about 18 months ago, we were put in a top-floor room in the "Sources" block, with garden & river view; this time we were put in the block next door ("Fontaines"?) with a so-called garden view, which faced a large part of the concrete wall of the "Sources". Not much garden in sight. We had stayed at this property under its previous owner and management team, and had no complaints. We were shocked to find that Sowell had discontinued offering full-service dinner, and replaced it with a self-service buffet. Cheap and shoddy decision! What non-resident diners, from outside, think of this, I can't imagine...Our well-behaved dog was not allowed in the dining room at breakfast or dinner times. So we had to use the terrace. Luckily it was not too cold and didn't rain....The shower floor in the room was dangerously slippery, especially with soap run-off. There should be a non-slip rubber/plastic mat! The plug in the sink didn't work properly, necessitating groping around underneath to let the water out. There were no sun-beds on the lawns outside, unlike our last visit. And the plastic lawn seating had not been cleaned. Sincerely,Martin & Jenny Bleasdale.

Not worth the money (Needs...

Liked: This property is located in nice green domain on the river bank. There is plenty of space to walk and a lot of parking space. The reception was very friendly.
Disliked: This is clearly not a 4 star hotel. The interior and bathroom look like modern style from 30 years ago. The double bed was in fact 2 small mattresses side by side, with one completly worn. Also the maintenance of the park seems minimal and the roof of the building opposite to our roof was even collapsed without any activity to repair it.

The reality did not live...

Liked: Nice gardenA lovely walk by the river
Disliked: The rooms need a refresh, paint peeling off walls, the room was dark,Unfriendly staff, breakfast was a chaotic scene each morning, one member of staff had to deal with everything, the ‘hot’ food was lukewarm, on one morning in particular there was no topping up, guests were clearing tables so they could sit and eatAttention to detail was lacking everywhere!

Unique location in the middle...

Liked: We stayed here once in 2002 and once in 2024, twenty-two years apart (!) And so we had the chance to compare it in its two versions. The location is unique: the river literally runs right through the grounds of the hotel. Wonderful. In 2002, the hotel was a small three-star hotel with a pool and very nice restaurant (which turned out to be the best restaurant in the area). In 2024 we found that the hotel had been greatly expanded on the ground, with new buildings housing 4-star rooms. We were very happy with our room this time around, which was large and clearly meant for guests who were staying for several days to do sporting activities, etc. Free parking available on the grounds, much appreciated.
Disliked: In 2024, the restaurant of the hotel was no longer the restaurant of 2002. While not exactly bad, there was no comparison to the excellence of the restaurant several years ago. This is not fatal, but guests should not expect a fine dining experience today.
