The Spotlight on Craigellachie Hotel of Speyside

Victorian Charm Meets Whisky Country Vibes

Modern comforts meet historic elegance at the Craigellachie Hotel of Speyside, a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of Scotland’s whisky valley. Built in 1893, this beautifully restored Victorian hotel boasts panoramic views of rivers, forests, and the surrounding mountains. With only 26 rooms, you’ll enjoy an intimate, character-filled stay—just a short drive from Elgin and the region’s top distilleries and attractions.

This is a place where tradition meets taste, with the world-renowned Quaich Bar offering over 1000 single malts and the Copper Dog Grill delivering hearty, locally sourced meals. Whether you're catching a show nearby or exploring the Highlands, Craigellachie makes for a memorable base.

Why Concert-goers love it

The hotel’s location makes it ideal for those attending concerts or festivals in nearby towns like Elgin or Inverness. After a buzzing night out, you’ll return to a peaceful, rural setting—perfect for winding down. Flexible check-in from 15:00 and check-out until 11:00 gives you room to breathe. There’s free WiFi and local staff ready to help arrange transport or tours, and while nightlife winds down early in the village, the on-site bars keep the vibe alive well into the evening.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking to combine live music with whisky tasting adventures
  • Solo travelers chasing a dream gig and a good dram
  • Couples planning a romantic weekend with music and mountain views
  • Fans who want a quiet and scenic recovery spot post-show
  • Budget-conscious music lovers seeking great value in a luxury setting

Food and Drink Options

You won’t go hungry here. The Copper Dog Grill serves up home-cooked meals made with award-winning local produce, ideal for pre-show dinners or post-show cravings. Breakfast is available for those slower mornings, and while there's no 24/7 room service, the bar stays open late. You’ll also find several walkable pubs and eateries in the village for a relaxed bite.

Nightlife Options

The hotel is home to two legendary bars: the Spey Inn (dating back to 1703) and the Quaich Bar, where you can sip rare whiskies or classic cocktails in a cozy, music-friendly atmosphere. While it’s not a party hotel, it’s a great place to enjoy quality drinks and conversation after a gig. For more lively scenes, Elgin is under 30 minutes away by car or taxi.

What People Say

Guests rave about the unique character of the property, especially the incredible whisky selection and scenic surroundings. Many highlight the warm hospitality of local staff, the quality of the food, and the peaceful vibe that makes it perfect for a weekend escape. Reviews frequently mention it as a hidden gem for both whisky fans and outdoor adventurers.

Areas for Improvement

Some visitors note that the rural location means limited public transport, so a car or pre-booked taxis are a good idea if you’re heading to events. Also, the historic building adds charm—but also means some rooms are smaller or have quirks like creaky floors.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers who want a peaceful, whisky-rich base with stunning views and character, the Craigellachie Hotel of Speyside hits all the right notes.

Delightful stay on Speyside

Liked: We were very fortunate to be upgraded and were given a beautiful room with double aspect windows and a whisky decanter on the table! Very comfortable bed and a modern bathroom with lovely fluffy towels. Very good meal at the attached Speyside Inn in the evening followed by a great time in the Quaich Bar sampling whiskies - thanks for the recommendation Oscar! Breakfast was delicious though service was somewhat slow (possibly not enough staff for a full hotel - the ones on duty were working very hard).
Disliked: We had a wonderful stay and thoroughly enjoyed our one night at the hotel - but it is extremely expensive and not sure it is worth the extra cost compared with some other lovely hotels we used on our Scottish trip.

Good stay but don't expect...

Liked: We liked our room except for the fact that the shower leaked all over the floor. It's pretty typical in the UK to see these half-walled showers but this one was especially leaky. The bed was comfortable and the location is great. The restaurant has a limited menu but was good, and we liked being able to walk just across the street for another dining option. Lots of parking. Felt very safe and would be good for a solo traveler.
Disliked: I hate that the wifi and cell service are completely unreliable. Breakfast would have been good in theory, but it took nearly an hour to get our food and there was only one other table seated!! The buffet had been completely decimated by our 9 am spot, the only time available, so we had limited options. The other two guests in the room ordered two avocado toasts and they seriously waited 45 minutes for their order as well. I heard the waitress tell them their food was being plated, and it took ten full minutes after that to arrive. It's a fine place to stay but I wouldn't recommend it without telling people to expect some annoyances. At a much lower price, I'd give this property a 9.

Highly recommend! Wish we would...

Liked: Although there were probably better views that we had, we did not request a room with a view. The hotel is beautiful. Our room was spacious and had amenities like coffee/tea, iron/board, towel warmer, etc. We ate at the restaurant and the food was very good. I took several walks on the nearby trails, and it was absolutely beautiful. The staff was exceptional. Oscar, who staffed the Whiskey bar was extremely helpful and knowledgeable on the over 600 bottles of Whiskey the bar holds. Jane, who staffed the front desk, was such a pleasure to talk to and was extremely helpful, providing suggestions on things to visit nearby. The property is near small shops and other pubs and restaurants.
Disliked: Wish we could have stayed longer!
