Set amid the stunning Cheviot Hills Chirnside Hall Hotel is a rural retreat just 15 minutes' drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the Scottish Borders. With a restaurant sourcing local produce and surrounded by private gardens this 4-star hotel also offers room service. Very good

Liked: The only staff member we met - who acted as receptionist, porter and waiter - was excellent.The breakfast was also freshly prepared and excellent.
Disliked: When we returned from our friends’ house between 9.30 and 10 pm we found all the downstairs reception rooms in darkness. Wanting a nightcap, we eventually found someone who served us 2 Armagnacs.

Deeply enjoyable

Disliked: Showers stepping up into baths (with no safety rails or rubber mats) too challenging for those in our 80s, as were the stairs with no lift.

Liked: Beautiful hotel, in a wonderful setting, serving excellent food. Fantastic place to stay. The room was very spacious and comfortable.
