The Spotlight on Casa Loma Hotel

Charming Budget-Friendly Base in the Heart of San Francisco

European in style and full of San Francisco charm, Casa Loma Hotel sits in the Alamo Square neighborhood—a laid-back yet central spot close to the city’s legendary music scene. With its vintage vibe, affordable room options (including shared and private bathrooms), and 24-hour reception, it’s a solid pick for travelers who want comfort without the big hotel price tag. Free Wi-Fi and a cozy atmosphere keep things simple and stress-free.

Why Concert-goers love it

This hotel is within walking or quick ride-share distance of some of San Francisco’s most iconic music venues in Hayes Valley, the Castro, and the Haight. After a late show, the 24-hour reception and nearby public transport make getting in and out easy. While there is daytime construction (from 9 AM to 6 PM), it won’t affect your late-night music plans or morning sleep-ins.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends looking for an affordable stay near nightlife
- Solo travelers catching a once-in-a-lifetime gig
- Couples planning a weekend of music and exploration
- Fans who want a quieter neighborhood to unwind after a show
- Budget-conscious music lovers who value location over luxury

Food and Drink Options

While Casa Loma Hotel doesn’t have an on-site restaurant, its location in Alamo Square puts you within walking distance of late-night eateries in both Hayes Valley and the Haight. From burrito joints to craft coffee spots, there’s plenty to fuel your night or morning. Breakfast cafés open late, perfect for sleeping off that encore set.

Nightlife Options

You’re a quick ride from San Francisco’s best bars, lounges, and live music haunts. Whether you’re heading to the Mission District for a dive bar crawl, vibing out to jazz in Hayes Valley, or catching a late DJ set, it’s all easily accessible. Back at the hotel, enjoy a peaceful wind-down in a quiet neighborhood setting.

What People Say

Guests love the location, friendly staff, and how easy it is to access popular neighborhoods and venues. Reviewers consistently mention the hotel’s great value and how the rooms, though basic, are clean and comfortable. Many solo travelers say it’s a safe and welcoming base.

Areas for Improvement

There is construction noise during the day (9 AM to 6 PM), so if you’re planning midday naps or working remotely, pack headphones. Some rooms have shared bathrooms, so be sure to book accordingly if that’s a dealbreaker. Views may be temporarily affected by renovations.

The Bottom Line

Casa Loma Hotel is a budget-friendly, well-located pick for concert-goers who want to crash somewhere clean, cozy, and close to the action—without breaking the bank.

Megan, Fallon, visiting The Independent San Francisco

Casa Loma was a decent place to stay for the price. Small and a little cold but what do you expect for an old building in San Francisco. The shared bathroom was not as clean as it could have been but if you just want a cheap place to stay in a good location this is the place.

Liked: Quiet and straight to the point.
Disliked: Shared bathroom was not as clean as it could have been.

A quiet stay with potential,...

Liked: Great location, fairly clean, competitive price, would stay again.
Disliked: Just a few small touch-ups could really elevate the feel of the property. The lobby is very quiet, and it comes off a little unwelcoming maybe a few cozy touches could help it feel more inviting. The rooms are on the smaller side, so adjusting the layout a bit might make them feel more open and comfortable. There are also a couple of minor things like blinds not working quite right and windows that could use screens, but overall it’s got a lot of potential.

Good value.

Liked: The staff were very helpful. Anything I asked was cheerfully done although I didn't ask much.
Disliked: I would have given a higher score as there isn't a lift. I was on the 2nd floor so getting luggage up 2 floors wasn't easy. Pity as there is little the owners could do to install a lift.

Misleading photos — reality was...

Liked: Location.
Disliked: It’s very disappointing that the photos shown online are highly misleading and do not reflect the actual state of the rooms. In reality, the rooms were in much worse condition — nothing like what was advertised. This felt deceptive and did not meet our expectations at all.

Good hotel

Liked: Convenient location.
Disliked: There is no elevator. The stairs and parts of the hallway are uneven and tilt to one side or the other. I imagine it adds an extra level of entertainment if you come back to your room drunk. Rooms are small, but I'm just there to sleep.
