Hotel Description
One of Devon's most beautiful wedding venues and bed and breakfast breaks this 14th century castle nestles in a valley surrounded by 30 acres of lush green land. The Exe River runs through the estate offering you the chance to fish or just sit and listen as the river makes its way back to the sea. This is an opportunity not only to be close to nature but to almost touch history: the chapel was built only 30 years after the Normans landed in Britain in the 11th century and stands intact today as probably the oldest 'living' building in Devon. Bickleigh Castle offers bed and breakfast and wedding accommodations with 15 bedrooms including twin double and family rooms available in the newly renovated thatched cottages situated around the castle courtyard. All of the bedrooms are tastefully decorated and furnished to a high standard.

Poor value for money

Liked: Lovely surroundings.
Disliked: Owner asleep when we arrived & took 10 minutes to rouse anyone to come to reception where our personal details were on display for anyone to see. Uncomfortable mattress, thin pillows, ripped & frayed bath towel, mould around shower tray. Hoping to have a treat for 50th birthday, but disappointing at £140 a night for both accommodation & breakfast - no cooked breakfast. It was help yourself to fruit (at least 2 of the blueberries in the bowl were mouldy & the strawberries were on the turn) & yoghurt, cereal, toast & jam/marmalade. Were served tea or coffee & 1 warmed croissant per person. Not offered extra.

Very disappointing. We toyed with...

Liked: Fresh fruit in the breakfast buffet. Nothing else.
Disliked: The room was very small and cramped. The bed was a small double. There was no wardrobe. The TV was tiny and the reception poor. There was no WiFi in the room. The room only had one set of towels on arrival. The room was not serviced.Although a kettle, coffee etc was provided when we made coffee it was undrinkable. We were not sure if this was due to the water quality or something else. The manager was away and had left the gardener in charge of reception. He then disappeared and the only person we saw was a young girl who did the breakfast. It was difficult to pin down when breakfast would be available - in the end it was 9 am before we got anything.Apart from the fruit, breakfast was poor - ' continental' with little choice , sliced bread and.no.marmalade
