Authenticate Wales experience in a...

Liked: We were a large group of 13 people ages 9 to 78 and had traveled to Crickhowell as a stop during our vacation. We stayed 3 nights at The Bear. The hotel staff was so accommodating and kind to all of us. A couple of our children are very tall (6 feet 4) and when they saw that they didn't fit in the bed comfortably, the staff changed their room without us even asking. We had dinner at the hotel the first night of our stay and the food was great. The beer garden at this hotel is delightful and we spent many hours there during our stay. The hotel itself is beautiful and comfortable. The rooms were clean and very quiet. The setting in the town of Crickhowell is amazing. The hotel is located in downtown Crickhowell and it was fun to be able to just walk to different restaurants. There are some really amazing hiking trails that are also walkable from the hotel. We got to Crickhowell by private car service and just used the local bus to see different destinations near Crickhowell. It was easy and inexpensive. We had a wonderful time and will definitely stay again at The Bear.
Disliked: we loved everything

We really enjoyed our stay.

Liked: Loved the pub itself and the way the rooms are set out. Lovely beer gardens, great location, friendly staff.
Disliked: The room was ok but not worth £140pn without breakfast. The bath towels were tiny and the water was so hot you could of made a cup of tea with it. (need a warning sign). We couldn't lock the door from the inside and room service almost caught an eyeful.

This was our second visit...

Liked: The Bear has bags of character. Higglety pigglety corridors, nice outdoor seating in summer, friendly staff, and right in the centre of a lovely little town.
Disliked: Our ‘cosy’ double was VERY small, but comfortable.

Great hotel, lovely food, a...

Liked: The location is great, the bar and the garden
Disliked: We recently stayed at The Bear for two nights and, while the food was excellent and well-priced, several aspects of the stay left us disappointed. If you choose to eat in the garden, the waiting staff will bring the food to you, but they cannot take orders for food or drinks — those must be placed at the bar. With my severe arthritis in the knee, repeatedly going up and down the stairs to the garden made the experience quite uncomfortable.Unfortunately, the blonde receptionist was unhelpful, preferring to respond with a “computer says no” approach rather than trying to find a reasonable compromise. We had initially booked for two nights and were keen to extend our stay for an additional two nights. I asked if a discount might be possible for the Monday and Tuesday nights, but was given a weak excuse that, as we were Booking.com customers, the rate was fixed. As a seasoned Booking.com user, I know from experience that hotels often accommodate extensions or new bookings directly, so this felt dismissive. In the end, we moved to The Manor, where we had a much larger room with full breakfast included for £100.00, compared to £195.00 without breakfast at The Bear. While The Bear is undoubtedly a lovely hotel in terms of charm and food, the lack of flexibility, poor customer service, and value for money means we won’t be staying again.

Superb

Liked: Lovely, traditional hotel/pub. Very well maintained. Helpful staff, good rooms and food.
Disliked: Plastic cups in the rooms wrapped in plastic - would be nice to see something more sustainable being used in a nice hotel.
