Horrifying experience

Disliked: Baymont got decent ratings (7+) on Booking.com, which we use a LOT, so we booked this place as a halfway point to our road trip destination.We pull up, there are maybe 11 cars. A bad sign, but it was a Thursday night, and this is off the beaten path.Got to the lobby at 10pm and there were two other sets of people waiting in line, but no attendant. They said they had been waiting for over 15 minutes and tried to call the property, no answer. Sign for manager on duty is listed as “Mike”.5 minutes later, a young guy comes up and starts to address the first group. No apologies, no anything.He was pleasant enough as we checked in and he gave us a key to room. It was hard to find. Strangely, to go to our room, we had to go on an elevator up one floor, down a couple of hallways and then down again. Maze-like. The first thing that hit us when we got off the elevator was the smell of weed. Very pungent. The second was that musty smell of old carpet. Already not having a great feeling about being here, but it’s only one night.Now for the best part…We get to our room, use the key card, and the door opens slightly, as if the chain or slide-y lock is on. Did it accidentally catch when the last person left? We close and try again. Same thing. I have a weird feeling and think I hear stirring inside. We close the door and I knock. The door opens from the INSIDE, with the chain still on. A man’s voice: “Hello?” Us, startled: “Ummm, hi. We think this is our room?” Him: “It’s obviously NOT.” Can’t argue with that.We went back to the desk. Got lost on the way and ended up outside and on the back side of the buildingMy husband shared what happened, and let them know we wouldn’t be staying here, it felt unsafe on several levels. They said they would cancel our reservation. Via email, it looks like they did, but it’s beyond the free cancellation period, so we’ll see if we get charged because it’s still showing $202.00.HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?
