Barksdale House Inn Guest Reviews
Write a review
Set in a beautifully preserved 1778 home, the Barksdale House Inn blends old-world elegance with modern comfort. With its European-style decor, four-poster beds, and inviting atmosphere, this centrally located inn is a cozy home base for exploring the city’s vibrant live music offerings. Just steps from the College of Charleston and under a mile from the Old City Market, you're right in the heart of historic downtown Charleston.
This inn's prime location makes it easy to walk to many of Charleston’s most popular venues and music events. After a late night out, guests love returning to a peaceful, quiet atmosphere, far from the noise of bars and clubs. The flexible 3:00 PM check-in and early 7:30 AM check-out suit travelers with tight show schedules or early flights. Plus, the charming ambiance provides a perfect wind-down after a high-energy night.
While there's no on-site restaurant, the Barksdale House Inn offers a daily à la carte breakfast — perfect if you've been up late. Coffee-making facilities in each room help with early mornings, and you’ll find plenty of walkable dining options nearby, including late-night bites on King Street just a few blocks away.
Though the inn itself is quiet, you’re only a short stroll from Charleston’s thriving nightlife. Live music bars, cocktail lounges, and clubs are all within easy reach, especially around King Street and the French Quarter. For a more laid-back evening, explore cozy wine bars or rooftop spots with local flair.
Some guests mention that the historic charm comes with a few quirks — like smaller bathrooms or creaky floors — but most agree it adds to the inn’s authentic feel. If you're looking for a sleek, modern hotel experience, this might not be your style.
The Barksdale House Inn is a cozy, character-filled choice for concert-goers who value location, charm, and a peaceful place to unwind after the show.

Lovely house and staff and...
Liked: Attractive old house. Staff were kind and very helpful. Location excellent near free bus services and shopping street. Visitor centre and organised trips 20 mins walk away. Always hot water for shower. Breakfast excellent. Free wifi. We booked 5 nights, stayed 2, and have been given a rebate for the 3 unused nights.
Disliked: No lift and room at top of house meant 2 80+ year olds struggling to 3rd floor with heavy suitcases (though receptionist did help). Room small and not enough wardrobe hanging space. Double bed just OK. Bathroom cabinet mirror broken No washbasin plug..

Very enjoyable stay at this...
Liked: Excellent breakfast. Ordered from a menu with many choices. Very well prepared and tasty. Nice sweet breads, cookies in the morning and throughout the day. Fruit and breakfast bars available as was water, coffee and tea. Staff was friendly.
Disliked: The room was very nice but at night we heard street noise. Also there were floor boards that were loose and one was raised a little which was easy to trip over.Would have liked more help and suggestions with information around the area and not just in the binder. Some of that information was outdated.

Superb accommodations in the heart...
Liked: Breakfast was excellent, made to order every morning. Location was perfect- in a quiet spot, but close proximity to shopping and tourist attractions. The staff was friendly from the moment we arrived until the moment we left… We felt like we had known them for years. Very comfortable accommodations. Excellent Wi-Fi.
Disliked: Minor issue with bathroom toilet….. staff quickly addressed the issue.

Great! We loved it!
Liked: We loved the location and ambiance. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. It was great interacting with the staff and other guests and staying in a historic building!
Disliked: We stayed in the only four person room, and it was a tight fit for four adults. The beds are pushed up against the walls so the only way way to get out for the people sleeping against the wall is at the foot of the bed. We made it work, but would have been better off renting another room.

Liked: The staff was wonderful and very helpful. The breakfast was delicious and it really is a treat to enjoy an appetizer with a glass of wine in the afternoon, thank you.
Disliked: The air conditioning unit in Room 10 may need attention as there was what sounded like water running and this would go on every ten minutes throughout the night which made for lack of needed sleep. I turned off the unit and this greatly helped, however, got hot. Just too many sleepless nights.
