Set in a beautifully preserved 1778 home, the Barksdale House Inn blends old-world elegance with modern comfort. With its European-style decor, four-poster beds, and inviting atmosphere, this centrally located inn is a cozy home base for exploring the city’s vibrant live music offerings. Just steps from the College of Charleston and under a mile from the Old City Market, you're right in the heart of historic downtown Charleston.
This inn's prime location makes it easy to walk to many of Charleston’s most popular venues and music events. After a late night out, guests love returning to a peaceful, quiet atmosphere, far from the noise of bars and clubs. The flexible 3:00 PM check-in and early 7:30 AM check-out suit travelers with tight show schedules or early flights. Plus, the charming ambiance provides a perfect wind-down after a high-energy night.
While there's no on-site restaurant, the Barksdale House Inn offers a daily à la carte breakfast — perfect if you've been up late. Coffee-making facilities in each room help with early mornings, and you’ll find plenty of walkable dining options nearby, including late-night bites on King Street just a few blocks away.
Though the inn itself is quiet, you’re only a short stroll from Charleston’s thriving nightlife. Live music bars, cocktail lounges, and clubs are all within easy reach, especially around King Street and the French Quarter. For a more laid-back evening, explore cozy wine bars or rooftop spots with local flair.
Some guests mention that the historic charm comes with a few quirks — like smaller bathrooms or creaky floors — but most agree it adds to the inn’s authentic feel. If you're looking for a sleek, modern hotel experience, this might not be your style.
The Barksdale House Inn is a cozy, character-filled choice for concert-goers who value location, charm, and a peaceful place to unwind after the show.

Wonderful staff, so many ‘extras’...
Liked: The breakfast was superb and the staff are absolutely wonderful. The afternoon tea was very welcome, too, and to have coffee ( and snacks ) available 24/7 is a very rare and wonderful commodity. The staff make this place. It’s conveniently located and safe to walk down to the waterfront and back. We didn’t use the car so the parking was a bonus.
Disliked: The bathroom has probably seen better days and could do with much better lighting, but it was clean and the water was hot. We were in the Carriage House and the floors above creak, not ideal when the occupants are apparently walking around in circles for hours at night! But that is a very, very minor thing compared with how lovely the house is.

Liked: We loved staying here. The location was phenomenal, right in the middle of old downtown Charleston. We could walk everywhere. The parking was wonderful and our vehicle was safely parked in the large lot behind the house the whole time we visited Charleston. There was a charge for parking but if you compare that charge to other parking garages, it was well worth the small charge. We stayed in room 14 in the Carriage house behind the main house. This room is located on the first floor and was large and roomy. The bed was comfortable and there was a small frig in the room plus a safe for valuables. There was coffee and tea available just outside the room, in the hallway - very convenient. The shower was fine and the water was hot, although it took just a few minutes for the water to heat up. The room was furnished with a queen bed, a wardrobe with drawers and a hanging space, several chairs and small tables, a TV. Toiletries were available plus a hairdryer. The room has it's own mini split unit so the temperature of the space could be controlled by us. The free breakfast was wonderful also and beautifully served in the main house in several rooms in the main house including a sunroom. There is a beautiful patio garden out back and the house offers a free teatime which included little sandwiches, cookies, small cakes, granola bars, drinks and a free glass of wine for each visitor. An amazing amenity. This place was made for people who love old houses with their charming details. It was built in the late 1700s and has high ceilings. The bathrooms were obviously added later and ours was smaller but very serviceable and had a tub.
Disliked: Just a few suggestions: add a floor lamp in the room near the TV. It was just a bit dark back there. Re-do the towel racks and this time, hit the studs so that the racks are firmly secured. Perhaps add another small shelf or table in the bathroom so that items could be placed on it. But these were very minor things and we will be returning to the Barksdale House !
