The Spotlight on Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin

Stylish Clifton Stay with Iconic Views and Easy Access to Bristol’s Music Scene

Modern charm meets Victorian elegance at Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin, perched dramatically above the Avon Gorge with sweeping views of Brunel’s world-famous suspension bridge. Located in the leafy Clifton neighborhood, this hotel offers a relaxed, upscale vibe just two miles from Bristol’s buzzing city center and its top live music venues.
Whether you're in town for a once-in-a-lifetime gig or a relaxed weekend of music and sightseeing, this scenic spot blends style, comfort, and location effortlessly.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert fans appreciate the peaceful setting after a night out, with the added bonus of being just a short cab or bus ride from Bristol’s major music venues. The hotel’s 14:00 check-in and generous 12:00 check-out make it easy to roll in late and sleep in the next morning. The Clifton location means you’re close to late-night pubs and transport options without being surrounded by the city center's noise.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a stylish base near the action
  • Solo travelers chasing their favorite artist
  • Couples making a romantic weekend of it
  • Fans seeking a quieter, scenic recovery spot after the encore
  • Budget-conscious fans who want comfort with character

Food and Drink Options

The hotel’s White Lion Bar is a local favorite, offering modern British cuisine and a massive terrace for al fresco dining with unbeatable views. While 24/7 room service isn’t available, there’s a solid selection of restaurants and pubs just a short walk away. Breakfast is served on-site, ideal for late risers recovering from a night of dancing.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t host live music, Clifton’s vibrant bar scene is just steps away. Think cozy pubs, wine bars, and chill lounges that make for perfect pre- or post-show hangouts. For more of a party vibe, it's a quick trip into central Bristol for clubs and bigger venues.

What People Say

Guests rave about the breathtaking views from rooms and the terrace, the charming Clifton location, and the overall atmosphere that blends historic character with modern touches. Many say it’s the ideal place to unwind after a busy night out, thanks to the comfortable beds and quiet surroundings.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that not all rooms have gorge views—so it’s worth requesting one if that’s a priority. A few also mention that the building’s age means some rooms are smaller or have quirks, but most agree the charm outweighs the trade-offs.

The Bottom Line

If you're after a scenic, stylish, and peaceful stay within easy reach of Bristol’s concert scene, Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin hits all the right notes.

Very good, re-furbished room with a great view of the bridge. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. Would definitely stay there again!

OK but won't rush back

Liked: Good location for us as we needed to be collected en route to Bristol Airport. Nice bar area, nice meal in the restaurant and nice staff. Great view.
Disliked: We upgraded with an offer sent before arrival. The upgrade room was average and we felt didn't reflect the extra cost. Glad we didn't pay full price for it! The hotel is huge and the long corridors are narrow and uninviting.

Very pleasant stay for one...

Liked: The Avon Gorge has a great location with the stunning views of the Clifton Suspension bridge and Hotwells basin etc. The room had a fine balcony to enjoy those views.
Disliked: Honestly, the Hotel is in major need of a full refurbishment as it is dark and tired looking (sorry to say). To attract more guests, the owners need to consider updating all of the interiors to capitalise on the location and opportunity.

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Disappointing and over-priced

Liked: The location
Disliked: My room had a balustrade/low wall close to the windows which made the room dark and slightly depressing. It also half-blocked any views. The area outside the windows was very unpleasant and not clean. It was full of debris, cobwebs and dead insects. Breakfast was not included and was very expensive, particularly for a 'continental style' breakfast. The quality of the food (esp. the bread) was not good. There was a wedding at the hotel when I was there and the bar area was not open to the public at anytime during my stay.

Highs and low

Liked: Beautiful view, quiet, great location and rooms were clean and comfortable
Disliked: The disorganised, unhelpful reception when we arrived. We had had a very helpful call about parking and our late arrival prior, yet we were met with an unwelcome greeting, no help with parking and they couldn't even be bothered to point us towards the lift. The constant vile sniffing by one of the staff was simply quite disgusting. The staff at morning check out were lovely
