Laid-back Hostel Vibe in the Heart of Old Montreal

Modern yet artsy, Auberge Alternative is a budget-friendly hostel tucked into the cobblestone charm of Old Montréal. With its eclectic, communal atmosphere and unbeatable location, this spot is perfect for music lovers who want to stay close to the action while keeping costs low. You’ll be just a short walk from major concert venues, museums, and metro connections.

Guests enjoy free Wi-Fi, a shared kitchen, and cozy common spaces, all in a historic building that blends old-world character with youthful energy.

Why Concert-goers love it

The location can’t be beat—within walking distance to several popular live music venues and just 8 minutes from Square-Victoria Metro Station, making it easy to get around late at night. Rooms are basic but clean, and the relaxed hostel vibe means no one bats an eye if you roll in at 2 AM. The 14:30 check-in is ideal if you're arriving the same day as a show, and luggage storage makes early arrivals or late departures hassle-free.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a social atmosphere
  • Solo travelers catching a dream concert
  • Couples wanting an affordable weekend in the city
  • Fans seeking a chill, quiet place to wind down after the show
  • Music lovers on a budget who'd rather spend on tickets than a fancy room

Food and Drink Options

While there's no on-site restaurant, the shared kitchen is great for DIY meals or late-night snacks. You're also surrounded by cafés, pubs, and eateries within walking distance—perfect for a quick bite before or after a concert. Breakfast isn't provided, but you'll find plenty of nearby options open late or early.

Nightlife Options

You’re steps from Old Montréal’s vibrant nightlife, including local bars, lounges, and cozy pubs. Whether you're looking to keep the night going or just grab a nightcap, you'll find something within easy walking distance. The hostel itself doesn’t have on-site music, but the surrounding area is buzzing with live entertainment.

What People Say

Guests love the unbeatable location, friendly staff, and artsy vibe. Many highlight the hostel's cleanliness and the welcoming, laid-back atmosphere. Reviews also often mention the value for money, especially given the central setting.

Areas for Improvement

Shared bathrooms aren’t for everyone, and noise from other guests can be noticeable in communal spaces. Some guests noted the building shows its age—but most agree it adds to the charm.

The Bottom Line

If you're headed to Montréal for a concert and want a central, social, and budget-friendly place to crash, Auberge Alternative hits all the right notes.

Disappointing

Liked: The front desk staff had excellent service attitude and were able to answer any questions you had.
Disliked: It might be because the building is old, but the wooden floors creak loudly, making it easy to disturb roommates. Since it’s located in a lively area, it also gets very noisy at night. The six-bed dorm was quite a shock—it had triple-decker bunk beds, and I was on the very top, which made climbing up really inconvenient. QQ

Cozy and central

Liked: Great central location, beautiful hostel with a focus on sustainability , which is great. But all amenities are provided. The beds were very cozy and showers were great! The staff is helpful and friendly.
Disliked: The AC was on too often, which gave me a bad sleep, but the hostel staff offered me to move me to a different bed. This issue is not the hostel's fault in itself at all really, as it is more something to say about some hostel guests who kept turning on the AC on a rather mild night. Also, I am not sure if it is a general building standard in Canada/USA, but there were just few plugs in the room to charge my phone, away from the beds.

Very friendly hostel in a...

Liked: Amazing hostel right in the heart of Old Montreal! The staff are super friendly and helpful (especially Alice and Sabina), and the volunteers also help to create a great atmosphere. This is not a party hostel (quiet hours start at 11pm), but it's nevertheless a great place to meet people from all over the world and even create lasting friendships. I was pleasantly surprised by the broad range of ages of people staying there, from families with young children to retirees in their 70s.

Superb

Liked: I went to Montreal as a Leader of a school group. We stayed in Montreal just for a 20 hours stopover. This hostel is a great option for a group like mine. Absolutely Central location. Comfortable common areas and good enough rooms and dorms.Great value for a nice price.
