The Spotlight on Argyll Western Hotel

Classic West End Charm Just Minutes from the Music

Modern convenience meets traditional style at the Argyll Western Hotel, a warm and welcoming stay in Glasgow’s vibrant West End. Housed in a lovely townhouse with period features like corniced ceilings and a spiral staircase, this hotel is just a short walk from the University of Glasgow and a quick bus ride to the city centre. Set on Great Western Road, you're surrounded by the charm of cafes, bars, and cobbled lanes—perfect for soaking in that pre- or post-gig atmosphere.

Why Concert-goers love it

With the number 66 bus stopping right outside, getting to and from gigs across Glasgow is a breeze—even late at night. The hotel is tucked away enough to offer a peaceful night’s sleep post-show, but still walking distance to buzzing Ashton Lane and other nightlife hotspots. Check-in starts at 3:00 PM, allowing plenty of time to settle in before heading out, while the 11:00 AM check-out gives you a bit of post-concert recovery time.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends heading out for a weekend of music
- Solo travelers ticking off a bucket-list gig
- Couples looking to combine concerts with a West End getaway
- Fans who want a quieter retreat after the show
- Budget-conscious concert lovers wanting charm without the cost

Food and Drink Options

A hearty breakfast is served daily in a high-ceilinged dining room—ideal after a late night. While there's no on-site bar or 24/7 room service, you're just minutes from walkable dining options on Ashton Lane, including pubs, cafes, and late-night eats. Bring back snacks and enjoy a quiet tea in your room with the in-room kettle setup.

Nightlife Options

You're in luck if you're looking to keep the night going—Ashton Lane is just around the corner, known for its buzzing bars, indie cinema, and lively atmosphere. While the hotel itself stays mellow, it's the perfect base to launch into Glasgow’s nightlife or return for a peaceful wind-down.

What People Say

Guests rave about the hotel’s location and character, loving the balance between West End charm and concert accessibility. The free WiFi, friendly staff, and comfortable rooms consistently earn high marks. Many highlight the ease of transport and mention feeling safe and well-rested after busy nights out.

Areas for Improvement

The hotel doesn’t offer air conditioning, which can be noticeable during rare warm spells. Some rooms are compact, and the spiral staircase means you’ll want to pack light if you're on an upper floor. Still, the character and location tend to win people over.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers seeking a cozy, well-located, and affordable base with Glasgow charm, the Argyll Western Hotel hits all the right notes.

Decent enough but needs improvement

Liked: Very clean room with fresh decor. Friendly and welcoming staff. Decent location. Lots of nice nearby restaurants and close to convenience stores.
Disliked: Although technically openable, was impossible to open window, it was an extremely heavy sash one. Even if you managed to open it, closing would be more dangerous due to the weight and downward momentum. Really needs looked at. Also, the room looked to have been one room split into smaller rooms, which itself wouldn't be an issue, but more than half the room was a corridor/wasted space. Again, if this had hangers, etc. and places where the space could be utilised, that'd be great, but that wasn't the case.

Lovely hotel

Liked: The room was large and comfortable and the staff helpful and friendly. Location was great.
Disliked: A non-slip mat in the shower would have been good.

Poor

Liked: The situation of the hotel was good, with a good arrangement of shops and places to eat across the road. Staff were welcoming, helpful and hard working. It. There is no lift and no ground floor accommodation. Numerous stairs lead to the first set of bedrooms. I had been booked for 2nd floor but young man on duty, changed my reservation to the first floor. It was difficult and a slow process for me to get to my room
Disliked: The bed had a sprung mattress and you could feel the springs as soon as you lay down. Just before midnight, a couple moved into bedroom next door. They were extremely noisy and started fighting. The young man on duty immediately came up and told them if they didn't stop, he would have to ask them to leave. This, of course, was not the fault of the hotel owners and was handled well by the only member of staff on duty. Unfortunately, I packed up and left at this time, as I was unable to get back to sleep and I had a 475 mile trip to face!!! The hotel would have been fine except for the beds and I wouldn't stay there again because of this and for the fact they had no lifts.

Good

Liked: Location, location, location! Perfectly situated on the GWR. Walking distance to the Subway, the Botanical Gardens, Byres Road, and the University of Glasgow. Hot shower, strong water pressure, and clean bathrooms and bedding.
Disliked: Very thin walls, uncomfortable bed (a mattress topper would fix it!).

Excellent West End location

Liked: Excellent location. Quiet considering city centre location which can be very noisy.
Disliked: Bathroom very small. Had to close windows as strong smell of weed being smoked somewhere outside.
