The Spotlight on Alt Hostel

Historic Charm Meets Backpacker Vibes in the Heart of Old Montreal

Alt Hostel (also known as Auberge Saint Paul) is a cozy, budget-friendly hostel set in a charming historic building in Old Montreal. Just steps from the Old Port and major music venues, this laid-back spot offers simple accommodations with a social traveler atmosphere. With free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned rooms, and a 24-hour front desk, it’s a solid base for concert-goers looking to explore the city’s nightlife and culture without breaking the bank.

Why Concert-goers love it

This hostel is less than a 10-minute walk from some of Old Montreal's top music venues, making it easy to get to and from shows on foot. The 24-hour front desk means late-night check-ins after a show are no problem, and the shared lounge is a great place to unwind with fellow music fans. While it's in a vibrant part of the city, the rooms are surprisingly quiet for a good night’s sleep after the encore.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a low-cost, social stay near the action
  • Solo travelers chasing down their favorite tour dates
  • Couples spending a weekend enjoying shows and local charm
  • Fans looking for a quieter, relaxed environment post-concert
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who'd rather spend on tickets than hotels

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no on-site restaurant, the shared kitchen means you can whip up snacks post-show or prep for a full day of festival-hopping. Dozens of eateries, late-night pizzerias, and cafes are within walking distance, and many stay open late into the night. Breakfast options abound nearby, perfect for a slow start after a long night.

Nightlife Options

Old Montreal is packed with nightlife hotspots just minutes away. Whether you're into chill lounges, cocktail bars, or full-on clubs, you’ll have no trouble finding a scene that suits your post-gig mood. While the hostel itself doesn’t have a bar or live music, its central location more than makes up for it.

What People Say

Guests love the location, often calling it “perfect for exploring and getting to shows.” The hostel is also praised for its cleanliness, affordable rates, and friendly staff. Travelers love the social atmosphere and say it's a great place to meet other concert-goers and backpackers.

Areas for Improvement

The shared bathrooms may not be ideal for everyone, especially after a long night out. And while rooms are clean and functional, they’re fairly basic—don’t expect luxury extras. Some guests note that it can get a bit noisy in communal areas, but earplugs usually do the trick.

The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a no-frills, super-central place to crash after the concert, Alt Hostel is a smart and social choice for music fans in Montreal.

Exceptional

Liked: The location is incredible. Bonsecours Market is right outside the entrance. You are not just nearby. Once you step out, you are already there. The Clock Tower is less than a ten-minute walk, and La Grande Roue and the zipline area are only a few minutes away on foot. Given the location, the price is very reasonable, especially for people traveling alone. The staff were kind and helpful throughout my stay. Claire was especially wonderful. Another staff member helped me with check-in (sorry, I did not get her name); she was also lovely and welcoming. Reception is available all day and night. You enter with a code, and each room has its own security code. The neighborhood feels safe even after dark. There are pubs nearby and people walking around until late. There is a clean shared kitchen next to the reception. You can store food in the fridge and label it with the supplies they provide. Coffee is available too. You can borrow a hairdryer at the front desk, which is convenient. There is also a laundry room with a sign-up board to manage the queue. Just keep in mind that towels are not included, so you will need to bring your own or rent one.

Hostel nested in old Montreal

Liked: Aubergine Alt Hostel is situated at the center of old Montreal. This is an optimal accomodation for a solo traveler who wants to meet other travellers. The kitchen/lounge is very welcoming, and there is often communal cookies prepared by staff for the guests. The kitchen has most of the equipment you will need to prepare meals, and guests are respectful with space and timing in order to reduce kitchen congestion. The bed is comfortable and the associated locker provides a good sense of security for putting things away. Overall Alt hostel is a great place for open-minded travellers who want an affordable and central accomodation in Montreal.
Disliked: There is a bit to remember regarding door pins, and moving through seperate buildings. Could be improved using a card system

I will pay a bit...

Liked: Having a bed to sleep on
Disliked: Sharing a room with people; between the over social, being assigned a top bunk bed that was frankly not easy to get into or out of, having to listen to roommates videos because they forgot to pack earphones, the noise outside until 2am I think, there was no way I could get the early sleep I wanted.
