20 South Battery

This was a disappointing experience!

Liked: Good location for visiting downtown Charleston.
Disliked: Where to start? The small room? The bare-bone bathroom? The cheap and pathetic “Managers Reception”? The absence of service? The insistence to peddle the house breakfast?When paying $400 per night, one expects a certain level of comfort and service; one will not find it at 20 South Battery. Instead, if one is lucky to find some parking available near the establishment, one will have to carry one’s luggage to one’s tiny room. There is no bell captain or porter. In fact, there are only two people at any given time and their duties do not include assisting guests with this type of service.While the location of the property is excellent for touring Charleston, it is the only positive attribute. Our room was small and poorly equipped – after asking if better accommodations were available, I was told that ours was probably the most desirable of the carriage house rooms as it had a view of the garden. There was some kind of closet on one side but no doors to it. The bathroom was adequate for a budget hotel. We were invited to the “Managers Reception” where charcuterie and cheese were offered on individual plates (one each per guest) while water and soda (!) were served…While the staff is not helpful, they are hard to ignore. Butting in into conversations, repeatedly trying to enroll you in the local breakfast service (even texting you) and trying to find out where you have made a dinner reservation.

A really special place and...

Liked: The hotel is beautiful, unspoiled and unique. The location is excellent. The staff are super helpful and friendly, a particular mention for Abby who really went out of her way to make our stay enjoyable.
Disliked: Nothing could have been better.
