Auburn Hills is a suburb of Detroit found 30 miles northwest of the city. It's safe to say you won't be swamped with options. But sometimes all you need is a friendly sports bar, decent food and a steady supply of cool beer. You'll find this type of place here, along with a modest variety of cafes and pubs.
Meadow Brook Hall
How about some 1920s flair? This mansion documents the story of the Dodge brothers and their role in revving up the car industry. For $15, the hour-long guided tour will take you around the many grand historic rooms and along the garden walk in summer.
SEA LIFE Aquarium
While away an hour or two among fish, octopus and other sea creatures from the deep blue. The 'touch tank' offers the chance to get up close or else you could play it cool in the underwater ocean tunnel. Tickets cost $16.65 and upwards.
In 30 miles, you could be in the vibrant urban sprawl that is Detroit. Artists and young designers display their works in graffiti-covered warehouses, while ambitious restauranteurs whip up innovative dining experiences in reclaimed spaces.
These guys claim to be one of Detroit's best pizza joints. Do they live up to that? We suggest you tuck into a plateful to decide. The restaurant is part of a local Detroit chain known for their square slices, we recommend visiting their store in Auburn Hills which is a 5 minute drive from the arena.
Maybe it'll be a draft beer from the wide selection. Or perhaps the bartender will mix you up a lemon drop martini. Enjoy a cool one with a tasty dish like the bacon cheeseburger slider or crispy calamari at this large restaurant where all sauces are made from scratch daily.
Makimoto Sushi Bar
For fresh sushi in pleasant surroundings, make a beeline to Makimoto. The chefs prepare a good range of favorites like smoked salmon and tuna rolls, as well as more adventurous dishes including the 'volcano' with yellowtail, jalapeno and wasabi tobiko.
Thankfully the journey isn't too difficult. You can find the palace located just east of I-75. There are several entrances; if traffic is on the heavy side, head for the Ramp Entrance which should be less busy.
Picture your average stadium: wings in buckets, buns wrapped in napkins, deep fat friers sizzling in the background… The prices are pretty standard, too (hot dogs $4.50, soda $4, beer $9.50). If you want a plate beneath your food, you could pull up a chair at the Palace Grille or Terrace Club restaurant.
Yep, and the good news is it's free.
All Detroit Pistons Home Games charge $15 per car. Concert-goers pay a bit extra at $20. The lot opens three hours before the event start so you'll have plenty of time to circle around for that preferred spot.
It depends on the event, so check your ticket.
There are lots of stairs to climb. You might want to stock up on drinks before heading to your seat. Or else bring sweat bands?
