Very disappointing

Liked: Jamestown is a lovely quaint town.
Disliked: The property was extremely disappointing and not at all what we expected. Was not as advertised. Checked in with a guy who didn't know what he was doing. Told me breakfast was not included even though my booking clearly shows it was included. Gave me the code for the back door to gain access but it didn't work and he didn't know how to fix it so we couldn't use that door. He couldn't work out how to turn on one of the only two lamps in the room. Lovely claw for bath tub but the shower hose has no hook so had to try and hold it while washing yourself or let it just hang down. The used soap bar and empty shampoo and conditioner sachets from the last people to rent the room were still in the soap dish in the shower. Dirty marks/liquid stains down walls. TV was just balancing on its edge on a chest of drawers with no stand so was unstable. Receiver box for TV was hidden behind the TV and couldn't be moved so that it would receive signal from remote control.I made the booking in April 2023 for a stay in September and from what I can see online it appears the property changed hands in that time. My husband and I are not fussy travelers and are happy with basic rooms but for the price we paid for The Palm, we could have gotten a far better room at another property, with breakfast, for less. Previous reviews were very good but things seem to have gone downhill rapidly recently. This is a shame because it has the potential to be a wonderful B&B with lots of character. Hopefully they plan to renovate and improve their customer service or else they will receive more negative reviews.

Unfortunately we could not recommend...

Liked: The location was within walking distance of restaurants and downtown Jamestown. The owner was very gracious in refunding our stay.
Disliked: There was a TV in our room but no cable hookup. There was no hot water, lukewarm at best. The desk clerk was not terribly helpful in resolving the situation. We decided to look for other lodging after speaking with the owner. She did refund us our money. She was very gracious and courteous when we spoke with her.

Lies lies lies

Liked: Micheal the care taker /maintenance he was polite very accommodating very respectful and apologetic
Disliked: The building itself has great bone and potential considering its age. The new owner has not taken down the current web site it is very misleading and basically fictional. I booked the stay as it was only minutes from train Town and my wife loves trains. The interior was musty, stale in extreme disrepair, removing the carpeting alone would do wonders for the building.Ownership has spent more money on keyless entries throughout the entire building, which is hit and miss working correctly. The new owners want a bed and breakfast to be 100 percent hands-free, and there is no interaction with guests at all.Which is pretty ridiculous.I'd say all the 5 out 5 reviews they've been given were either paid for or friends and relatives.I would never recommend nor stay here again

Exceptional

Liked: I can’t rate this hotel highly enough. Mike at the front desk gave me the warmest welcome, greeting me by my first name, and we spent the next twenty minutes just chatting. He appears to run the place single handed, and does a fantastic job. He made sure my room was nice and cool for me arriving, and in the morning cooked me a great breakfast. The hotel is over one hundred years old and my room had lots of great period features. The bed was probably the comfiest I’ve ever slept in. The hotel is located in a quiet residential area of a beautiful picturesque small town - it’s like going back in time to a gentler era.

Facilities in need of a...

Liked: The host (Michael) was fantastic. We did not like the first room that he placed us in and he then showed us the double-tub room, and asked if we would like to see any others - we took that one. The next morning, he cooked us a FANTASTIC breakfast (for only $10). He even offered us a small bowl of ice-cream before we turned in for the evening! (Of course we accepted.)
Disliked: Overall, the hotel is in need of a facelift. Before booking, the staff explained that they were new owners, and one at a time, would be upgrading the rooms.

I look forward to staying...

Liked: The location was perfect, close to the wedding we attended. Michael, the host was friendly and helpful. We arrived late and hadn't had dinner so he offerred to cook dinner for us! So kind and generous, but we ventured out and found a place that we could have a drink and appetizers. Upon our return to the hotel, Michael offered us dessert. It was delicious!
Disliked: The hotel has a history and has been around for a long time. Although the atmosphere was filled with charm, it is in need of updating. We met the new owner; she is lovely! I'm sure she will attend to the necessary updating.

Great location, loved the historic...

Liked: We wanted a unique experience, not a chain hotel, and we got that. Old Victorian.
Disliked: Booking.com stated "breakfast included". Was told upon arrival that breakfast was $10 extra and host had to go out to the store to procure the ingredients, which seemed way too much trouble for us. When arrived, house was locked and it seemed no one was there. Finally called hotel directly and got the host who came down and let us in. When we checked out at 8:30 am, no one appeared to be around, no coffee apparent and the only food available was a couple of sorry looking bananas and tired looking packets of oatmeal. Even a few Costco muffins would have been appreciated and a carafe of coffee. And then there were the roosters outside the window who started crowing at 4:30 am......
