Friendly, convenient and comfortable
Liked: Clean, staff brilliant and responsive when the Eurostar was delayed and we were not arriving until very late.
Disliked: Toilet / shower facilities separate to room (not ensuite) - only a minor inconvenience, especially for the price and location

Not a place to linger...
Liked: As other reviewers have mentioned, the location was perfect for onward travel by train and it certainly looked impressive from the exterior. The room from outside street noise appeared quiet although I only stayed one night. The one staff member I met was polite and friendly. Tea, coffee, biscuits provided. The bathroom was clean, towel provided. A hook inside the bathroom door would be a useful addition as no where to hang clothes/towel.
Disliked: There was no bedside light so you had to hop out of bed to turn off the very bright overhead light, or else use the corner light by the basement window which was not bright enough to be useful unless making a drink. Why no side light by the bed? Luckily I had a torch to find my way back to the bed without tripping. The bed base was torn and the headboard very shabby and not fixed onto the bed properly so it rocked. There was no plug in the sink and not possible to use a travel plug. The walls had damp patches (probably due to its basement locality) and three of the walls had a very strange thick plastic board on them with dents in it. There were even ants on the floor which I managed to flip outside the window. There was really nothing to enhance the room to make it a pleasant place to stay, the location being the only reason. I paid an outrageous £148 to stay here for one night, no breakfast even, which is overpriced in the extreme. The night staff even decided to sort through the laundry outside my room, something you would think could have been done earlier in the evening especially as there were other rooms in the vicinity who probably also needed their rest before an early start too. I then spent the 3 three following nights in a lovely small hotel in the Old Town of Cologne and the German hospitality and attention to detail couldn't have been more different. It was charming in every single way, something many British hotels and budget stays could learn a lot from. It was also a lot cheaper, of very good quality and little touches given so the guests enjoyed their stay and had some good memories to take away with them.
