The cozy rooms reflect the building's Victorian heritage yet have modern touches like work desks and free Wi-Fi. The charming lobby has cathedral ceilings Tiffany glass and marble everywhere — and best of all a Starbucks. You'll also find a restaurant and lounge on-site. The business center helps road warriors make the most of their time away from the office while the fitness room makes it easy for active types to keep up with their workouts. Parking is available on-site (for a fee). The Hotel Whitcomb is in SoMa (South of Market) about a half-hour's drive from San Francisco International Airport. The hotel is directly across from the landmark Orpheum Theater on vibrant Market Street. There is a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) rail station on the corner and the classic San Francisco streetcar line travels right in front of the hotel. Take the 10-minute drive to Pier 39 where you can see everything from sea lions to street performers do a little shopping at Fisherman's Wharf and get a bite to eat at a waterfront restaurant. Moscone Convention Center is about six blocks away as are the Yerba Buena Gardens.

Staff was helpful and prompt. Had a minor problem in our room and they immediately took care of it! Wonderful stay and looking forward to returning.

Liked: Absolutely stunning lobby. Craftsman woodwork and stained glass, just beautiful!

Room was small but did have large walk-in closet. It appeared to be clean and the beds were comfortable. Extremely close to Bill Graham venue. Very annoyed at the long waits for the 2 of 4 small elevators that were in working order. Worst hotel shower ever - long wait for warm water and miniscule water pressure. No in-room coffee so had to trek downstairs to the crowded Starbucks every a.m. Ice machine had ice about 1/2 the time. No room service available at all. Electrical outlet needs replaced. Might have been better satisfied at half the price I paid which was around $750 for 3 nights + $45/night for parking. I'd probably opt for the Best Western next time there's a concert at that venue.

Liked: Room was clean; very close to Bill Graham venue. Friendly, cheerful maid service very helpful.
Disliked: 2 out of 4 small elevators operable; very little shower water pressure; no in-room coffee & no room service available; had to set a bag in front of electrical outlet to keep plug from falling out.

Loved the comfortable bed. Didn't...

Liked: Bed was comfortable.
Disliked: Light in bathroom connected to noisy fan which was annoying every time you put light on. No facilities in room for making tea/coffee or downstairs. Carpet was old and had an old smell. Corridors were dark. Don't like shower in bath set up.

Disliked: Although the building has a history, rooms were poorly painted with zero ammenaties

Great, short stay at the...

Liked: It's a great old building, which is surprisingly well taken care of. Big rooms, clean bathrooms, huge HDTV. Good wifi.
Disliked: The deposit situation is a bit of a nightmare. Yes, most USA hotels charge a deposit amount, but nearly 1 week after checkout they're still "holding" my deposit, which turned out to be +$200, even though they said it would be $100. I imagine I'll get it back eventually, but it's a very annoying system, plus the deposit hold is also higher than they said.

Too expensive for a subpar...

Liked: I liked the lady at the front counter, I liked the Starbucks in the lobby
Disliked: Way too expensive for sub par. It was the same price for two nights here, in the middle of poverty every which way, than it was in Colorado paradise for 3 nights in a hotel 3 times the size with no bums asking me for money, and running around in underwear in the lobby.

Clean hotel while visiting family.

Liked: The room was clean. I booked a King size room but at check in switched to 2 doubles so I could have a quieter room not on the street sides. Unfortunately, there is a 3:00am garbage dumpster pick up & drop off daily in the driveway next door. No fault of the hotel, just something to know. My AC worked well but very noisy clunking on & off. I stayed to visit family so the location worked well for me. Requesting a free coffee machine & set up for the room worked well. Walgreens is nearby for cereal bars to have a light bite in the morning. Market is also a block away & has many take away or eat in options. Check out their back alley, sitting area shared with Twitter. Walking to the Hayes area for restaurants is easy. Continue on & Alamo Square with the "painted ladies" is up a few blocks. I never felt unsafe walking back to the hotel from Van Ness Ave. in the evening, not sure I would walk any further though. Lobby always had security although the elevator did not require any to access.
Disliked: The bathroom really needs a remodel. The shower head is way too low, although pressure was good & water was hot. Each floor has a filtered water machine except the 7th floor is out of order, when I told the front desk, he said to use the 6th floor one. I really missed not having a restaurant in the hotel. The area outside is not pretty so an attached food option (not starbucks) would have been nice. Elevator did not require a room key to use. I would not recommend this location to a first time visitor on vacation.
