Appalling and unsafe condition.

Liked: Location - very central
Disliked: long stairway up to reception. 3 long metal bannisters on the right were falling off the wall. All three of them. Had I leant on the them without seeing the damage, I could easily have fallen down 20 stairs. I think this is seriously dangerous and should be reported to the authorities. If one was slightly loose - OK. All three were coming of the wall and one bannister - a metal tube 10 ft long was waving about in the air, not attached at either end but by one screw in the middle. I'd be terrified if anyone less stable than me stayed there. This was the only way into and out of the hotel.

Served its Purpose

Liked: The negative reviews lowered our expectations so we were pleasantly surprised when we actually turned up. As a place to stay just for a night it was utterly fine and served it's purpose well.
Disliked: The three-bed room we stayed in only had 2 cups for the much needed morning-after brew and I had to use my toothbrush to stir my tea. Worse things happen at sea.

Could be worse :)

Liked: The location was perfect and staff were very friendly. Hairdryer and ironing were available, which was nice and there was a really cute tabletop lamp (in photos). The low cost and property location kind of explains why the hotel can get away with not bothering too much.
Disliked: My basics were covered - sheets and bathroom were very clean. The rest was, however, a bit dirty. There were stains on the decorative pillow and bed cover. The wallpaper was torn and there was a dirt halo where the doors had been pushed open over the years. Unlike the hotel description, the bathroom is not ensuite and is outside and shared, not private. There is a photo of a bar, which I think might be from the hotel next door. A bit of scrub and perhaps a coat of paint to brighten the place up and perhaps re-brand it as a hostel, rather than a hotel and I would be rating it a lot higher. Also, whoever did those photos did a great job, unfortunately, these photos set people up for disappointment.

Poor

Liked: Good beds, friendly staff. Central location, suprisingly quiet (further upstairs)
Disliked: The room was run down, shower produced too little water, varying temperature, black mold in the folds. Toilet seat not firmly fixed. No reading light on either bed.

Avoid at all costs. Worst...

Liked: Nothing.
Disliked: We stayed in a 3 bed shared room which was like a squat. The bathroom window was broken and the shower full of mould, walls covered in marks and not even enough cups for a coffee each in the morning. The staff were clueless and totally unavailable. Good luck trying to even get into the hotel and no-one answers the door or the phone. Thank goodness it was central otherwise this hotel would have completely ruined our trip. Stay away! I wish I'd have demanded a refund but the staff wouldn't have understood anyway... Oh and did I mention the riotous bar beneath which is open until 12.30 am?
