A characterful B&B in the...
Liked: We chose the Clarkeston Inn mainly for its location, which is on a quiet side street near to the main areas of Newport. The arrival process was a little confusing as there is no signage outside the property, and the Inn is part of a collection of other buildings and accommodation facilities run by owner. However, once we established where the office was located, the staff couldn't have been more helpful, ensuring we were parked OK and helped with the luggage to the room. The room itself was very quaint with lots of nice period features, and as a bonus had a very large shower area. Breakfast was included in the room rate, which was all nicely cooked to order from an extensive menu.
Disliked: As previously said, the property is a period house with lots of nice features, but it could do with some sympathetic updating and redecorating to make it top notch. The heating system is centrally fed warm air with bizarrely no control in the room itself, and it was absolutely roasting! No matter, a member of staff quickly arrived with a stick to prop the period window open - we did appreciate the adapt and overcome attitude!

An enjoyable stay in a...
Liked: You can?t beat the location. It?s a block from Thames street where most of the bars and restaurants are and only a few blocks from the wharfs. You can easily walk the same routes the tours buses charge you for and at your own pace. The breakfast at the inn was very good and fresh. There is parking at the inn which is a plus bc parking is very limited. The Inn overall is nice and definitely has that cozy rustic old home feel.
Disliked: The hallways and rugs were very dirty and in desperate need of a good vacuuming. If you like your room cool don?t stay on 3rd floor heat rises and it gets hot. Windows only open an inch. Don?t leave your luggage open or any candy or food around you will most likely find it open and eaten by morning, house is few hundred yrs old there are little friends in walls but that?s normal for a house that old.

Nice place but......
Liked: Property is very close to all of the little shops downtown and just 2 blocks from the water. Breakfast and coffee were very good too.
Disliked: Parking super tight - if you have a truck do not take it. The big disappointment was the fireplace. We chose the room because of the fireplace;website advertises ?working fireplace.? We even bought Duraflame?s so we could enjoy a nice romantic night by the fireplace. It?s the ~only reason why I chose it. We get there & ask if it was ok to use and we were told ?no, those aren?t used this time of year?. It?s 48 deg in oct ? They even asked me when they called me to confirm the room, that if I needed a fireplace? Makes no sense at all. So I spent $500 for a night that I could?ve spent $50 at super8, same result. Kinda disappointing.
