Waikiki Hawaiian Grill
Restaurants today have become an important part of American life. Many people find that dining out at a restaurant contributes to the overall quality of life. Therefore, Waikiki Hawaiian Grill aims to create the classic Pacific Rim "plate lunch." The Pacific Rim "Plate Lunch" is a traditional Hawaiian meal consisting of an entree (chicken, beef, pork, or fish) served with steamed rice and macaroni salad. During the 1930's to 60's the forerunner of today's drive-in restaurants were the lunchrooms. At one time the old City Directory had separate listings for restaurants and lunchrooms. A restaurant differed from a lunchroom in that you didn't really have a waiter/waitress for a lunchroom. You placed your order at a counter, you either went to the counter or the food would be delivered to you in a bench seating area. They were opened usually for breakfast and lunch. Many lunchrooms were located in industrial areas of Honolulu. These were eating places for the blue collar workers- no fancy tablecloths, just good cooking at a cheap price. Waikiki Hawaiian Grill is a throwback to the lunchrooms of yesteryear. There is seating for about 35 people. The walls are adorned with pictures and photos of Hawaii's sumotori. Some menu items have sumo size portions for those with a hearty appetite. The food is great with homemade overtones of flavor. Close your eyes and you can hear mom saying," finish your meal or you won't get big and strong."
