This independently-owned country house is set in the wilds of Hampshire but is just 5 minutes from the M3, and the Grade II listed mansion makes a grand setting for some classy dining. The cosy, oak-panelled restaurant serves traditional English food with a modern spin, using carefully-sourced ingredients. Try roulade of salmon with crème fraiche and cucumber dressing, followed by pan-fried skate served with mango, avocado and chilli or breast of chicken with aubergine confit and thyme jus. There are open fires in winter and the restaurant does a great Sunday lunch.
