Fairuz
Fairuz is named in tribute to Lebanon's most famous chanteuse -- a sweet, dotty idea that, if copied, could lead to Cliff Richards the chippie or Madonna the burger bar. One of London's more relaxed and intimate Lebanese restaurants, Fairuz still observes all the traditions: white tablecloths, formal service, the instant appearance of olives and chilled salad veg upon arrival. But the decor, cooking, and staff are all pleasantly flamboyant. The decor is warm yellow with turquoise touches. There's a general bonhomie among the staff and clientele. And the cooking bursts with Eastern Mediterranean flavours -- old favourites like tabouleh, foul moukaaka, and moutabal do new dance steps on your tongue. Good vegetarian selection, of course, and complimentary fruit and baklava with coffee.
