Reviews of 31 Castlegate Restaurant

Had an excellent meal at 31 Castlegate. A couple of menu items were not available (Sunday evening) but the alternatives we chose were excellent - try the duck. Not too pricy considering we ate off the ala carte menu although we could have gone for the set menu which appeared very good value for money. Will definately return when we are next in York.

We booked 31 Castlegate for the early bird menu which was excellent value for money. When we got there and saw the a la carte menu; that was beautiful too, but decided to stick with the early menu. Interior of the restaurant is lovely, not too many tables and the service was excellent. Food was served piping hot and very tasty too. Wine not badly priced. Too full after 2 courses to have a dessert, but the ones being served to others looked fab! Didn't visit the toilets! Would recommend a visit!

31 Castlegate, despite being quite hard to find, was a wonderful little restaurant. The food was lovely and the service excellent. I would recommend it most highly.

My partner & I booked for 8.30 on a Saturday night & were amazed that 31, Castlegate was only a third full. Ambience would have been considerably improved if more people were dining. Starters were disappointing. Soup did not taste home made & the avocado & pecan was uninspiring. Main course was very good. Excellent steak & chips. Lamb very tasty & perfectly cooked. A pleasant meal in a pleasant room but not somewhere I would be in a hurry to book again.

The food was good, portions plentiful (too much) however, I would request a table upstairs as downstairs is by the kitchen and toilets, there is no view and it is hot and stuffy. Definately not a romantic dinner but with a large group of hungry people it would be a good option.

On what appeared to be a quiet night, 31 Castlegate's food and service seemed below that of a restaurant of that calibre. Food was slow to come, on the cool side and wasn't that tasty. Unfortunately very disappointing.

The food at 31 Castlegate Restaurant was good, we both went for the specials and were not disappointed. The dining room was simple and uncomplicated and the service was pleasant.

31 Castlegate - just up from the castle grounds in York - is ok - nothing particularly special - not bad - just good middle of the road stuff. Food was well cooked (rack of lamb with mint juice was tender and nicely pink). Presentation and taste of puddings was great - the 3 x chocolate was extremely tasty. Service was attentive but not over powering. If ever in York - then give it a go.

We were greated by smiling staff, which is always a good sign. Having spent the day trudging around York in the rain we considered cancelling and just going home - I am so glad we didn't. We both had a lovely starter, the lamb we had for our main courses was the best we had ever tasted and we were so impressed we decided to have the dessert too which was devine. Having a jug of iced tapwater was not a problem as it is in so many restaurants nowadays. We will certainly be back. Thank you.

Dinner at 31 Castlegate for 6 - excellent value ("Early Bird" menu runs from 6pm to 9pm). All starters and mains very tasty! Desserts (for those who still had room...) very good. Thoroughly recommended.

We arranged to meet two friends at 31 Castlegate to catch up after a long time no see. Perfect place to do this - quiet, sophisticated ambience. The food was beautifully presented and tasted every bit as good as it looked. Their prices are reasonable on the a la carte menu but represent amazing value on the 2 courses for £10.95 deal and even better at 3 for £12.95. The sticky toffee pudding may sound heavy but it's a delicate work of art! Don't take my word for it ~ taste for yourself!

I was very impressed with 31 Castlegate. Their three courses for £12.95 is great value and there is no compromise on the quality. The service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was perfect. This restaurant not only lived up to its rating but far exceeded it!
